Hello Farm Friends, how has the first week of autumn been treating you? It’s seemed more like November than early October here at Verde Farm but the weather man is promising a nicer week ahead. We went to a fun event this weekend called “Farmapalooza.” Local farms come together and sell their animals, farm goods and enjoy the company of like-minded folks.
We took six of our bantams, juvenile muscovy ducklings and chestnuts to the event. All of the chickens sold, except one. A rogue, white banty rooster jumped out of the cage in a split second and off he went. All the best efforts to catch him were futile. We are hoping he found a nice roosting spot in the pumpkin park and will be found this coming weekend as the WV Pumpkin Festival kicks off.
Poor Banty Roo, we tried our best to catch you and bring you back home. Be well our little friend.
In thinking about chickens, we wanted to share an update on a building some of you may remember, “New Chicken Digs Contest."
Nancy, of A Rural Journal, won the chicken digs contest by naming our little coop "The Heartbeak Hotel.” We just loved the name and couldn’t wait till spring/summer to paint it and prepare it for the chickens. Farmer and I spent a weekend getting it all ready and it turned out great. Below is the now “open for business” Heartbeak Hotel...featherbeds available.
It’s for the birds and they love it!

How cute! Hello MM...you and hubby sure did a wonderful job on the Heartbeak Hotel...love the feather bed part LOL! Too bad about your little rooster...he sounds like a little leghorn rooster we had who you just couldn't catch. I'm sure he's smart and agile enough to stay safe. I hope you get that beautiful fall weather they're predicting in your part of the country. We're in the 80's (92 tomorrow) and again no rain so we're back to watering everything. Please send us rain if you can spare it! Have a wonderful week!

And I thought MY chickens were spoiled! What an awesome coop/pen! Does it have TV? Air-conditioning? Ya know, chickens don't like it too hot...

The Farmpalooza sounds wonderful. I may talk with one of the local farm stores and see if we can put something similar together in my area. I love the coop! I can't wait until I am able to get some chicken next spring! We are thinking right now that we will get 8 to 10. We hope to add the chickens and some bee hives to our farm next year. My problem is just wanting to do it all at one time.
