A Brighter Verde Farm

"In the beginning," an unnamed, not so distinctive, some would say plain chick rose from the ranks of the average to assume a lofty perch atop a special egg.
This is the story of Sunny our enlightened chicken.

One thing we have learned on the farm is that you should always expect the unexpected. There are times we have chicken eggs coming out our ears and can't seem to gather them fast enough. Most of our hens just hand them over only showing a slight irritation, and few put up a real fuss.   Sunny is one of the fussers.  She always protests as we take her eggs as if to say, please let me hatch my biddies, flapping her wings and arguing all the way.  Well, after multiple attempts to gather her eggs, we agreed, Sunny definitely deserves to have her clutch.

My husband had been changing light bulbs all over the farm, including the coop.  He forgot he left one of the old ones laying on a burlap sack on top of a box.  The next morning when he went in to feed, Sunny surprised him with a new addition.  She  adopted the bulb as her very own large egg. Yes, that is a bulb under her wing.

He moved the bulb from under Sunny and just watched.  She immediately walked to her big "egg" and tucked it under her wing as close as  she could get it.  She makes no distinction between the bulb and her eggs and only leaves them to eat and drink.

It was then and there--a true light bulb moment--that we decided to let Sunny hatch her eggs. Right now, she is patiently sitting on her clutch and we truly believe Verde Farm will be a much "brighter" place once the biddies arrive. Now you know why we call her "Sunny".  We've been thinking of new names for her chicks and here are a few we've got in mind: GE, Ray Diance, Flo Rescence, Ultra Violet, Ed Ison. Any other suggestions?

What a funny hen!! Thanks for the laugh!

My inlaws told me that they had a hen that raised kittens out in their barn once. I don't remember the details, but the mama cat wasn't around anymore, so the hen tucked the kittens under her wings. They would go out and feed the kittens, and the hen kept them warm until they were big. But I've never seen a light bulb under a hen before!

Hi Amy!
Thanks so much for visiting my blog. You are truly a girl after my own heart! I love ALL your animals! And we think a like on the evergreens ... I think I will use them as a backdrop ... I hate not seeing green all winter long ... It is my favorite color. I am now a follower of your farm.

So funny! You can't discourage a Mama Hen -- once she sets, she's there for the duration. Little chickies are such fun, though, it's hard to really discourage a hatch.

Looking forward to the babies soon!

What a sweet little hen! I hope she is able to hatch a few of those eggs if not all of them (other than the light bulb). I have a Buff Orpington hen Buttercup who seems to get broody once a month or so. I did try letting her hatch a bunch but we have one chicken who lays thin shelled eggs which of course got broken. When I went to check under her she had 4 or 5 eggs stuck to her feathers...what a mess! None of the eggs hatched so we disposed of them. Now that we have 2 roosters I think we'll let her try again only this time we'll make sure that no soft shelled eggs get into the nest! I'm looking forward to seeing your little clutch in a few weeks. Have a wonderful Wednesday...Maura :)

I thought HER name might be "Sunny De-light" - as she clearly is fond of that light! Cute story!

aw bless her! She looks identical to one of my chickens, called maude. She goes broody as well, but not this year.
It's lovely having baby chicks, I've still got my 6 and another chicken went broody yesterday! I'll wait a couple of days to see if she sticks, then get her some fertile eggs.

Loved the photos and the story. Where would we be without these animals in our lives? How about Dee Lite? (got that from Monica's comment)

Awww what a cute little momma chicken she is, brings back fond memories of my mascovy "Ducka" who would sit on anything and even steal the chicken eggs right out from under a sitting chicken, you would see her pushing those egg across the yard to "her nest"...and then she would hatch them.

Thnx for the smiles and Sunny-shine
Blessings Kelsie

So sweet. I had a goose who lost her eggs to a raccoon that adopted a piece of a board to try and hatch. Poor girl.

How about Hally Jen? Sweet post Amy! Your little girl reminds me of our Helen from Hell. Next month if she get's broody again we're going to let her 'set' on some of the eggs. We tried this before but unfortunately it was too cold and we lost both chicks. I'm excited to see your new chicks...it's always fun when the little 'peeps' start hatching. Enjoy your day and your weekend!
